CSR is a complex issue with many stakeholders. It involves all government departments and statutory bodies, private sector companies, NGOs and individuals. The Indian context is further complicated by the fact that CSR is not a one-size-fits-all concept. There are several types of CSR activities, each with its own definition, purpose and scope. This can make it difficult to decide which ones are most important and effective in India.

For example, there is the corporate social responsibility (CSR) undertaken by multinationals operating in India; the voluntary efforts of non-profit organizations working on social issues; and CSR activities undertaken by domestic companies that have adopted sustainable development as part of their corporate governance policies. There is also the question of how much influence these stakeholders have on the government’s policies on CSR.
